CONSUMER ALERT: Grocery Stores Take Own Measures In Credit/Debit Fraud

Posted: Updated:

KHQ.COM - Grocery stores are now taking their own measures to protect its customers amid the biggest credit/debit card fraud scheme to hit the Northwest in 9 years. All Yoke's Fresh Market Stores and 21 Rosauers in the Spokane area are asking customers to pay with cash or check.  Some stores will offer a secure, slow, dial-up connection.

The stores are connected to wholesaler URM, which has fallen victim to a huge cyber-attack and compromised thousands of debit/credit cards.

The move by grocers to avoid the cards suggests the threat has not been eliminated and serves as a reminder to take extra precautions to protect your bank account. Financial institutions remind members to constantly monitor their account.

Also, they recommend finding out if you have an out of state spending alert on your account. This will flag your financial institution if your account is used out of state.  These alerts have been used to notify many victims in this debit/credit fraud scam.

Finally, if you have further questions about the fraud ring, call 1-877-237-7408. The Secret Service is investigating the fraud but isn't commenting on the details of the case.

The world's biggest social network has unwittingly allowed groups backed by the Russian government to target users with ads. That's after it took months to acknowledge its outsized role in influencing the U.S. election by allowing the spread of fake news.

CHENEY, Wash. - A neighborhood in Cheney is desperately trying to send a message for people to simply be responsible pet owners. Lori Beedle says she came home the other day from work only to find that her sidewalk was covered in blood and found cat fur all in her grass.
