RICHLAND, WA - Needy children in over 130 countries will be receiving Christmas presents this year thanks to some local volunteers.

Bethel Church partnered with Samaritan's Purse, an organization that delivers relief and aid during disasters, for their global project, Operation Christmas Child. The compact gifts are filled with items ranging from school supplies, to toys and even candy.

This year they were able to collect a total of 14,803 Christmas Child Shoeboxes in the Tri-Cities and eastern Oregon area. That number surpassed the 2012 collection by 2,161 shoeboxes when a total of 12,642 were donated. Their 2013 goal for the region was 13,777 shoeboxes.

The gifts will now be sent to Los Angeles to be processed, eventually making there way to children in the Philippines, Madagascar, Panama, Ukraine and other third world countries.
