PASCO, WA - It was a big surprise for Chiawana High School's DECA club Tuesday. They won a $25,000 grant from State Farm Insurance.

The students won the money as a part of the Celebrate My Drive competition to promote safe driving. Students gathered 20,000 signatures from community members who pledged to drive sober, text-free, and alert.

Chiawana placed in the top 50 out of 37 hundred participating schools.

"Dying or getting in car accidents, those are scary things that can happen. So with this project it's really been good for creating awareness for safe driving and I think it actually has benefited the student body," said Haley McLaughlin, the Chiawana HS Project Organizer.

The DECA club plans to use the money for more safe driving events like the Every 15 Minutes Campaign against drunk driving. A celebration is planned for the whole school to recognize their community participation.
