KHQ Exclusive Interview: Suspected Bank Robber Speaks Out

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – The man accused of robbing two banks in Spokane was arrested Saturday morning by Spokane Police Major Crimes Detectives. In an exclusive interview with KHQ, 31-year-old Alex Treadway said he robbed both banks out of desperation because of his circumstances. Treadway says he did not plan either robbery. Instead, both were spur of the moment decisions.

I obviously knew I was going to get caught from the beginning,” Treadway said. “I'm not really in my rational state of mind just to walk up to a bank with no mask on and think I'm not going to get caught, so I won't do it again I know that.”

Treadway is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery. Spokane Police say he is the man who robbed the Washington Trust Bank on Maple and Garland, and also the Banner Bank on Division and Lyons a little more than a week apart.

As Treadway told KHQ from jail, he was not wearing a mask and says he was not armed with any weapons during either bank robbery. In both cases, he handed a note to the teller demanding money and told KHQ he was probably more scared than anyone in the bank when he did it.

Saturday morning, about two weeks since the first robbery, he was arrested at an apartment complex in the 7000 block of North Colton. Treadway says he was there to see a friend and thinks someone recognized him and called police.

When asked why he did not just turn himself in, he says he did not think it would make a difference and knew it was just a matter of time before he was caught. He says this is something he would never do again and just wants to apologize to everyone hurt by what he did.

“I accept responsibility and apologize to the people that know me, you know, and I apologize to everybody who's impacted by this period,” Treadway said.

Treadway says a combination of the death of his parents, drugs, and alcohol lead him to this point. He will likely make his first appearance in court on Monday.
