SOS: Coats for Kids Drive in Desperate Need of Coats

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, WA - It's not officially winter yet but you wouldn't know it if you stepped outside. Bitter cold temperatures and even the first snowfall of the year are quite the reminder that some kids in our communities are cold.

Thousands of kids in the area are walking to school and waiting at bus stops without coats. So, we're sending out an SOS. The Salvation Army is in desperate need of heavy winter jackets right now.

"We are getting lighter, hoodie-type sweaters. We are needing the thicker, fleece-type winter coats for these kids. Like I said, the weather's getting colder, they need something a little bit warmer," said Ana Avila with the Salvation Army.

Last year, 1,500 coats were given away in the Tri-Cities. So far this year, more than 2,000 coats have flown off the racks. They're also collecting coats in Yakima and in eastern Oregon where hundreds of kids desperately need coats.
