RICHLAND, WA. The pet-loving workers at the Horn Rapids landfill are again collecting pet food during the holidays.

The workers this week are transforming the scale house into Santa's Pet Shop. The Christmas tree is decorated with 101 Dalmatian ornaments. The shelves are filled with stuffed animals. Photographs on the wall are portraits of pets that came along with their owners for the trip to the landfill.

Between now and New Year's Day, landfill customers can drop off pet food, pet toys, and other pet care products. The staff will then deliver the donations to Pet Over Population and Prevention, the group of volunteers that finds homes for stray animals in the Tri-Cities.

Those who donate receive a candy cane reindeer. Pets get a treat, too.

This is the third holiday season the workers have held their pet drive. In the past two years, the landfill workers have collected $1,200 in cash and nearly 800 pounds of pet supplies for POPP.
