Former Rugby Player To Make NFL Debut

Former South African rugby star Daniel Adongo will suit up for the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals. So what's the big deal? Adongo had never played football, let alone knew anything about the sport,  before joining the Colts practice squad this summer.

Per Mike Wells' article for ESPN, Adongo will play some special teams this weekend. Head coach Chuck Pagano thinks Adongo is ready.

"He hasn't been on the field under the lights when it counts, but he's played on the big field before, and he's run around and tackled before with no pads," Pagano said to ESPN. "I suspect instinctively he'll know how to do that. It might be more physical and violent because he does have pads. Don't be shocked if he gets the opportunity to knock some people around."

Adongo has been learning the ins and outs of the game from veteran players such as linebacker Robert Mathis and defensive lineman Cory Redding.

"The guy couldn't even put (football) pants on six months ago, knew nothing about football, and look at where he is now," Redding said to ESPN. "He's giving the O-line fits. He's a very aggressive player, and I can't wait to see him line up, where they put him."

While Adongo had literally no experience on the gridiron, Indy was drawn to the athleticism, size, speed and tackling skills he displayed while playing in South Africa's top rugby league. Since coming the the states he has gotten even bigger, adding 30 pounds to the 6'5", 240 pound frame he flew over with in July.

"I think it's a good tribute that I put in the effort and hard work," Adongo told ESPN. "I'm excited for the opportunity. But with that said, I'm not going to let that excitement get to me."

This is the kind of story movies are made out of, folks. Sunday we'll see if Adongo can line up with the best of them.

This lengthy build-up leads me to one sincere question: Did the 2001 season doom the Seattle Mariners franchise? If the M's had won the World Series that year, would we be talking about a dynasty? Out of the Park Baseball 15 allows baseball fans to answer that question.
