Deadly Yakima House Fire Ruled Homicide

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA. -- A 62-year-old woman is dead in Yakima after her house caught fire Saturday night.  Yakima Fire and Police departments are now investigating the death as a homicide.

Officials are not releasing a lot of details at this moment. A 62-year-old woman was found dead in a home in the 1800 block of Greenway Street after fire fighters encountered heavy smoke at the home around 5:30 Saturday night. Neighbors say an event like this is upsetting.

"It just has me thinking what's really going on in my neighborhood," Antonio Vasquez said. "I don't know if I feel safe anymore."

"There was a lot of smoke," David said. "Lots of smoke pouring out of a hole that was already torn in the roof. The front door was open, not much smoke coming out of the front door anymore. Someone did tell me that when they opened it, it was just a whole bunch of smoke that came out."

The smoke was so intense that firefighters had to punch a hole in the roof to release the smoke so they could enter. Yakima Fire and Police departments are working together to investigate the fire.
