NBCRightNow.com - When you are out shopping for the little ones this holiday season, what you buy for them, could actually be harmful to them.

Many toys have small pieces that may not be secured. When kids pull at those pieces and break them off, you instantly have a choking hazard. Nationwide, nearly 300,000 kids were treated in emergency rooms for toy related injuries in 2011. More than a third of those were children under the age of four. The Benton Franklin Health District says if your child is getting anything with wheels, make sure there's also a helmet under the tree.

"If your child is going to receive a toy for Christmas that rides, slides or glides we really need a helmet on their head," said Kathleen Clary-Cooke. "Helmets prevent so many injuries and fatalities that it's super important."

Toilet paper rolls are actually a tool recommended by experts. If a toy can fit through one easily it can just as easily be a choking hazard. Also, when playtime is over the Health District wants you to store those toys. Most of these incidents happen when toys are lying out and the kids are unattended.
