YAKIMA, WA -- If you like to heat your house with a wood-burning fireplace, you might have to find another way to warm up in Yakima County.

The Yakima County Clean Air Agency and Yakama Nation issued a Stage 2 burn-ban Monday because there are unhealthy levels of pollution in both the upper and lower valleys.

This happens because a lack of wind does not clear out harmful impurities in the air.

The agency said the additional smoke mixed with pollution can be detrimental to people with respiratory problems.

"It also makes it more difficult to breath, for the very young whose systems aren't really fully developed yet, or the elderly whose systems are kind of tired and worn.  So those categories of people want to be a little bit more careful," said Dave Caprile from the Clean Air Agency.

For a Stage 2 burn ban, agricultural burning, use of wood burning fireplaces and wood stoves is not allowed until conditions clear up.
