NACHES, WA - This time there will be no confusion, when Naches School District leaders ask voters to pass a nearly $23 million bond to build a new elementary school.

The superintendent said the bond failed two years ago when it just barely fell short of the 60 percent super majority requirement.

"We were told that we weren't clear on where it was going to be or what it was going to look like, what the design was going to be," said Naches School District Superintendent Duane Lyons.

"People back then did not feel informed, and even me being involved in the community I didn't feel as {informed,} said Parent Patti Hyatt. "I feel great after even listening to 45 minutes of this today."

Hyatt is attending one of the community discussions scheduled throughout the day. School leaders are showing parents and staff the initial layout and asking for feedback.

Administrators said the Naches Valley Intermediate School and the Naches Valley Primary School in Gleed are nearly 60 years old and need to be replaced.

"This room for example had two outlets in the front of the room, and one in the back of the room," said Lyons.

School officials said the heating and ventilation systems are also outdated.

Parents we spoke with said they understand the need for a new and improved school.

"I wish we would have had something for my kids, but I would like to ensure that the other children that come up through this community get to have this chance," said Hyatt.

School officials said the new building will hold about 500 kids. It will be built on an 11-acre lot right off Highway 12 near Allan Road.

Voters can expect to see the measure on the February ballot.
