KENNEWICK, WA - The Blue Ribbon Committee is tasked with setting the long term vision for the city of Kennewick

The committee will present 15 months of work Tuesday night and highlights of the 100 ideas they developed for how to improve Kennewick over the next 20 years.

They will share strategic options for the council to consider for a long term capital plan, all to improve the quality of life the city has to offer.

"We want to know what the vision of the people is. We know what the vision of the council is. What we don't know is what the people is. We want this commission to tell us the vision of the people," said Mayor Steve Young, City of Kennewick.

That's what the council will find out Tuesday night as they look at the many months of research done by the Blue Ribbon Committee made up of eight community leaders.

The committee is sharing a six year and twenty year plan for improvements focused on a better future.

"It's exceptional quality of life. It's a committee that has a strong safety culture. It's a committee that has great business practices. Controlled growth as we move forward, really to sustain the quality of life we have today or appreciate today within the city of Kennewick," said James Hempstead, committee member.

The six year plan includes growth in the area between the blue bridge and the cable bridge, expansion of the Southridge Sports Complex and pavement preservation.

The 20 year plan adds growth to the regional trail system and a new arena for concerts and sports.

The committee's contribution will help the council set priorities for projects and find the funding in their budget.

This strategic review of the city's 20 year capital improvement program aims to create a consistent commitment to Kennewick's future development.

"It'll help us to make sure that as councils change, as mayors change, the priorities can remain the same," Young said.

Mayor Young says the Blue Ribbon Committee will hold public meetings in the future to hear community feedback on the improvement program ideas.
