YAKIMA, WA - It is getting colder across the region and that can mean some serious health problems for the elderly in our area.

Doctors said people more than 65 years old are more susceptible to health problems like asthma and depression when it's cold.

And if they have a pre-existing condition like arthritis or ALS, the cold weather can make their symptoms even worse.

Doctors said respiratory issues are the most common problem that gets worse when it's cold.

"The cold air is like a trigger to cause the airway to be hyper sensitive, so we'll see more asthmatic attacks and more COPD attacks," said Dr. Qilin Lu from Yakima Region Medical Center.

Injuries from falling are also more common this time of year for elderly people because of slick sidewalks and roads.

Doctors suggest you frequently check on older members of your family to make sure they're warm and getting enough rest to avoid any health problems.
