Multiple sources have told SWX that longtime area football coach Chris Tormey was in Spokane on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to interview for the head coaching position at the University of Whitworth. The job has remained vacant since the resignation of  former head coach John Tully on Nov. 19.

A Spokane native, Tormey was most recently the defensive coordinator at the University of Wyoming. One source told SWX's Sam Adams that Tormey is "seriously interested" in the position.

Tormey's college coaching career began at the University of Washington as an assistant under Don James in 1984, staying on as part of Jim Lambright's staff, before leaving in 1995 to become the head coach of his alma mater, Idaho.

During Tormey's 5-year tenure, the Vandals went 33-23 while moving from the NCAA-1AA to the NCAA-1A (now what is the FCS to the FBS) in 1996. He coached Idaho in its first ever bowl game in 1998, the Humanitarian Bowl, winning 42-35 over a favored Southern Mississippi team.

In 1999 Tormey left Idaho to become head coach at the University of Nevada. In his four seasons the Wolfpack went 16-31. Tormey was fired at the end of the 2003 season before the end of his 5-year contract and was replaced by then athletic director Chris Ault.

From 2004-'13 Tormey has been an assistant at Washington, the University of Hawai'i, Washington State University and Wyoming. Tormey was fired as the Broncos DC on Oct. 29 of this year after his defense allowed back-to-back 50-point games.

Tormey is also interviewing with Central Washington University per a CWU release on Wednesday. Click here: http://bit.ly/IQDpRF

Per multiple sources, Tormey is one of three candidates who will be interviewed for the position by the Pirates. Whitworth hopes to make an offer late on Friday, Dec. 13,  and could introduce its new coach as early as next Tuesday, Dec. 17.
