It was a cold winter night in Riverfront Park on Wednesday as a group of kids boarded a train.

But this wasn't just any train, it is the first annual North Pole Express on its way to see Santa Claus. The idea came from the Spokane Parks Department and for the very first trip they invited some very special kids and their parents.

Over the next two weekends, the train will take kids on a ride throughout the park as they sing Christmas carols. The north pole express will run the next two weekends in Riverfront Park. Saturdays at noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm and Sundays at noon, 2pm and 4pm.

For tickets you can call 625-6600 or visit the guest services desk at the ice palace.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Legislature's failure to pass a capital budget means the state Department of Natural Resources is short of money to deal with unhealthy forests. The Legislature adjourned Thursday night without passing a capital budget, costing DNR $15 million to remove trees struck by insect blight, disease or drought. Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz says the agency needed the money to remove dead and dying trees.
