WALLA WALLA, WA -  A rate increase for solid waste disposal at Sudbury Landfill will go into effect on January 1, 2014.

The rate changes for the landfill were approved by the City Council in December 2012 as part of the biennial budgeting process. A complete listing of the new landfill rates is available on the city's website at www.wallawallawa.gov  in the Landfill Rates section of the Public Works Department information.

The per ton rate for general solid waste disposal will be $71.00; the previous per ton rate was $64.80.  The minimum load disposal fee will be $14.50 for up to 400 pounds. Increases will also be in effect on rates for disposal of items including tires, refrigerators, televisions, and asbestos. All solid waste disposal rates are subject to the state refuse tax of 3.6%. Clean green waste disposal will increase to $49.60 per ton and is not subject to the refuse tax.  Disposal of household hazardous waste by residents of Walla Walla County will remain free of charge.

The cost of purchasing compost from the composting facility will remain unchanged for 2014 at $33.20 per cubic yard plus 8.9% sales tax. Bulk pricing is available for compost purchases and more information can be found on the Rates page or by calling the Landfill office at 527-4591. The 50/50 mix and fill dirt prices will also remain unchanged next year at $21.20 and $9.20 per cubic yard plus sales tax, respectively.

The Sudbury Landfill is a utility-based operation meaning that the rates and fees charged to users of the facility are used to directly fund operations of the facility; the landfill receives no support from the city's general fund or any tax sources. Rates for solid waste disposal are determined by taking current operating, future expansion, and legacy care costs into consideration.
