Eastern Oregon Beats Bucs

by Whitworth University Sports Information

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Senior Kendra Lahue scored a career-high tying 20 points as the Whitworth University women’s basketball team fell to Eastern Oregon University, 77-71, Friday evening at the Kim Evanger Raney Classic in the Sherwood Center.

Eastern Oregon (10-3) jumped out to an 11-2 lead over Whitworth (3-3) in the opening minutes. The Mountaineers led by as many as 12 points in the first period. After a pair of free throws from Brittney Newcomb put EOU in front 23-13, junior Kendra Knutsen drained a three-pointer to pull the Pirates within seven, 23-16. Knutsen’s three sparked an 11-4 Whitworth run that pulled the Pirates within three with 9:07 left in the half. Kendra Lahue gave the Pirates their first lead, hitting back-to-back threes to put Whitworth up 41-36, but an 8-0 Mountaineer run put EOU back in front. Whitworth entered halftime trailing 46-41.

The Pirates used a 8-0 run on three-pointers from sophomore KC McConnell and a layup from senior Kayla Johnson to take a 49-48 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. After trading baskets over the next several possessions, Eastern Oregon was able to get defensive stops and take advantage of Whitworth’s shooting struggles, leading to an eight point Mountaineer lead with 2:25 left in the game. Whitworth pulled within five after a free throw from sophomore Lexie Zappone and then again on a pair of free throws from junior Katara Belton-Sharp, but the Pirates could not overcome the Mountaineer’s lead.

The Pirates made a season-high 13 three-pointers in the loss, with a 38.2 three point field goal percentage. Whitworth forced 11 Eastern Oregon turnovers, which they converted into 12 points, while only turning the ball over eight times.

Joining Lahue in double figure scoring, Kayla Johnson posted her second double-double of the season with 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds. KC McConnell chipped in 12 points and grabbed five offensive rebounds. Kendra Knutsen added a career high 12 points. Lexie Zappone dished out five assists and had two steals.

Brittney Newcomb led all scorers with 27 points. Nyesha Joseph added 12 points for EOU, while Taylor Riley chipped in 10 points. Nikki Osborne pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Mountaineers, and Nicole Redd dished out four assists.

Whitworth will also take on Corban in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic. The Pirates and the Warriors will tip off at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14 at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.
