Local Groups Donate Thousands to Help Kids Fight Obesity

YAKIMA, WA. -- Yakima kids trying to get in shape received a big boost Saturday. The Safeway Foundation and Sage Fruit Company donated two checks totaling over $85,000 to the "Act! Get up!Get Moving!" program.

The program is designed to bring children, ages 8 to 12, together with their parents to learn about exercise and healthy eating habits. The Sage Fruit Company says this program is worth the effort.

"Even just seeing the kids, when they come in they're super shy to begin with and when they walk out of here they are so much more confident and ready to take on the world," Kaci Komstadius of Sage Fruit Company said. "And we're just happy to be apart of that."

The 12-week program is sponsored by the Yakima YMCA and Memorial Hospital and is offered in both English and Spanish.
