The Eastern Washington women's basketball team defeated Idaho 85-84 in thrilling fashion on Saturday, Dec. 14, thanks to senior Aubrey Ashenfelter's basket with 2 seconds left. The Eagles (2-5) needed the nonconference win badly as they had only won once so far this season coming into the game.. While the Vandals (7-5), were trying to prove their dominance over Eastern as Idaho will join the Eags in the Big Sky Conference next year.
Senior Laura Hughes finished with 17 clutch points off of the bench to go with five rebounds and three blocks to help EWU earn the win. Ashenfelter was close to a triple-double, she scored 20 points, had 10 assists and nabbed 7 boards.
Idaho trailed 25-42 at one point but were able to rally back late in the first half thanks to key buckets by senior Alyssa Charlston and were only down by nine going into the break. Charlston finished with a career-high 32 points and junior Stacey Barr added 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
