RICHLAND, WA - A local author has penned a book he believes preserves some of the history of the Tri-Cities beginnings.

Sunday at Bookwalter Winery they celebrated the publishing of a new book that remembers the life of one man who made a major impact on our community.

"He brought something on the order of 3 to 5 billion dollars into the community," explained author C. Mark Smith who wrote the new book.

Smith has studied the life of his late friend. His second book tells the story of the origins of the Tri-Cities through the work of one man.

"The most important thing about it is that I'm able to honor the memory of Sam Volpentest whose memory really deserves to be honored in this community," said Smith.

Volpentest made many strides in the community. He co-founded TRIDEC so the community would have a voice in how the Department of Energy operates in the Tri-Cities. He also brought many of the DOE projects that have employed so many and built up the area.

"He was just dynamic in everything he did. He believed in doing things, he believed in the right way," said his son Sam R. Volpentest. He was just glad his father's hard work could be recognized in this way. He says Smith did an excellent job capturing the essence of the man his father was.
