YAKIMA, WA - Following up on a situation that's caused problems in the Lower Valley for quite some time.

The Lower Yakima Valley Groundwater Advisory Committee is partnering with the Yakima Health District to organize free well testing.

The health district said willing participants in the Lower Valley must have a private or shared well to get the test. Then, a health specialist will come and test the well for nitrates and bacteria.

It's a problem often seen in the Lower Valley, because health officials said there's an abundance of livestock and other harmful factors.

"If we have a problem with either one of those, they'll be given that information and if they want some information about how to resolve those on their own, we can give them that information as well," said Gordon Kelly with the Yakima Health District.

The health district said the results from this round of testing will help them better understand the conditions around the wells, and then they can find a way to help affected families.

The health district said this is part of an ongoing effort to make people more aware about the quality of their drinking water.
