What Can Nunez Add To The Zags Attack?

University of Louisville transfer Angel Nunez will be eligible to play for the Gonzaga University men's basketball team on Friday, Dec. 20.

The 6-foot-8 forward was highly recruited out of high school (Notre Dame Prep HS, NY), as Nunez drew offers from big name schools such as Arizona, Indiana and UConn before settling on becoming a Cardinal.

Nunez played in only 12 games off of the bench during his freshman campaign on a senior-laden Louisville squad that made it to the Final Four. Nunez was expected to play more in his during his sophomore year, but an ankle injury and severe concussion led to a lack of playing time and ultimately to his transfer to GU.

Following the news of Nunez's transfer last December, Zags assistant coach Tommy Lloyd spoke highly of the swing man to Jim Meehan of the Spokesman-Review.

Assistant coach Tommy Lloyd said Nunez has similarities to ex-Zag Micah Downs, who transferred to GU from Kansas. "He's a talented player," Lloyd said. "He's long, skilled and athletic."

Nunez offers size and speed from the wing and  showed an ability to score on Big East opponents in limited opportunities (averaging 2.0 points per game as a freshman). With his wingspan and speed, the No. 2 jersey will look to spread out the Gonzaga offense, which could work well with guard Kevin Pangos' ability to drive into the paint and score or kick it out to a shooter, all while taking the pressure off of Gary Bell Jr. to be the only true shooter on the perimeter.

Nunez's first action could come this Saturday, Dec. 21, against Kansas State as the Zags will head to Wichita, Kan. to play in the Wildcat Classic. The game is at 12:30 p.m. PST and will be aired live on ESPN2.
