YAKIMA, WA - If you are planning to adopt a pet as a gift for someone, the Yakima Humane Society said you might want to think twice.
They said every year the see an increase in people bringing in pets after the holiday because they no longer want them or are not prepared for a new pet.
The Humane Society said if you are planning on getting a pet during the holidays; make sure you make a long-term family decision.
"A pet is a lifetime commitment and around the holidays we think about giving a gift and we do have families that come in to adopt, they've thought about that, they've talked with their entire family, but a little puppy grows up and it's a lifetime commitment and everyone does that some responsibility," said Erica Seaver-Engel from the Yakima Humane Society.
They said the best thing to do if you are thinking about giving someone a pet for Christmas is to give them a gift certificate so they can pick out a pet on their own that will fit their needs.
