Oregon Health Official Who Oversaw Development of Cover Oregon Steps Down

Posted: Updated:

PORTLAND, OR - An Oregon official who oversaw most of the development of Oregon's troubled health insurance exchange has resigned.

The leaders of the Oregon Health Authority and the Department of Human Services sent a memo to staff on Thursday saying Chief Information Officer Carolyn Lawson stepped down for "personal reasons."

Lawson oversaw most of the development of the online enrollment system for Oregon's health insurance exchange, Cover Oregon, which still doesn't work more than two months after it was supposed to launch.  Its failure has been a high-profile embarrassment for the state.

Lawson handed off control of the exchange in May after running out of money sooner than expected. An internal report found serious problems with its functionality.
