RICHLAND, WA - The snow Friday created some extra work for local city street crews.

Winter officially starts Saturday, but the snow just couldn't wait. The streets were slushy Friday night, but earlier they were covered in a blanket of snow.

Street crews in Richland didn't take their chances and put snow plows on the streets to clear the roadways. Five plows removed the light snow from the streets and also dropped a mixture of salt and de-icer.

Crews started at 8:30 this morning and continued into the afternoon.

Richland public works says if it's slick they won't risk dangerous roads and will scrape the streets clean.

"As soon as we see the snow start falling, it's accumulating, we make sure the tracks are out. Either our trucks or deicer truck and we keep going until the roads are clear," said Dave Pardini, Richland Public Works.

Richland crews cleared all the major roadways and even some side roads and neighborhoods.

Other city and county public works departments said that they did most of their road work Thursday night in preparation for Friday's snow.

They used mostly de-icer and salts to protect the roads.
