The Postal Regulatory Commission approved a 3-cent price hike for a first class stamp. Starting January 26th, the stamp will cost 49 cents. Bulk mail, periodicals and package service rates will rise six percent.

Regulators say the higher price is a result of severe decreases in mail volume over the past five years. The Postal Service says it lost five billion dollars in the last fiscal year.The Postal Service hopes the higher rate will help it recoup about $2.8 billion in losses. The price hike is to last no more than two years.
