PASCO, WA - The Department of Ecology says firefighters in Franklin County are working to monitor and suppress the fire burning under the Pasco Landfill.

The DOE says a fire continues to burn underground in a small 25-foot section of the landfill where old municipal wastes are buried, but there is no immediate threat to people who work or live nearby.

The site is closed to the public and posted with no trespassing signs. The department says it is still working with the Pasco and Franklin County Fire Departments to suppress the fire.

Contractors have put soil on the area where the ground had settled, and cracks and smoke appeared.  Firefighters haven't found any elevated temperatures on the surface of the ground where new soil was placed.

The DOE says it also hasn't found any combustion related landfill gas at the surface or in breathing zones once crews finished the soil cover work.
