Fire Warning: Prevent Christmas Tree Fires by Watering Your Tree

Posted: Updated:

NBCRightNow.com - Firefighters say Thursday night's house fire in Pasco is a great reminder to make sure your Christmas tree is well watered.

Pasco Firefighters tell NBC Right Now a Christmas tree caught fire in the basement of a home on Ruby Street Thursday evening.

Crews say the fire's flames were so intense, they had to initially fight the fire from outside the home.

"Christmas trees...We generally end up with a few calls particularly with ones that are dried out, or again, are too close to a heater or heat source or something like that.  This time of year, after they've been up since Thanksgiving or so, many of the real ones are drying out and are fairly dry so they're receptive to fire," Batt. Chief Mikal Barnett of the Kennewick Fire Dept. tells us.

Barnett says it's important to keep anything that can catch fire a safe distance away from heat sources.

It's also a good idea to make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
