KENNEWICK, WA - Hot items like big screen tv's and tablets flew off the shelves this holiday shopping season. They ended up under your Christmas trees and now those boxes are leaving clues for thieves.

People are getting rid of those boxes and enjoying the new toys in the comfort of their homes. But, thieves can spot those empty boxes and know exactly what you now have inside.

Police tell us you should break down the boxes and make sure they're not in plain sight. Also, remember to lock your doors. All of them.

"Don't leave valuables in your car, even if it's locked because the thieves will just break a window or break into it if you have something valuable in there. Most of what we see is cars left unlocked and in fact this time of year with the frosty mornings we're having are we're going to continue to have, we've had a number of cars already stolen this week," said Sgt. Ken Lattin.

That's because people are warming up their cars and going back inside while it heats up. Police remind you that's illegal if it's parked on the street and it's an easy target for a car thief.
