NBCRightNow.com - As you are cooking over the holiday season, firefighters want you to take some precautions.

Sunday NBC Right Now was on the scene when a grease fire sparked in the kitchen of a Copper Ridge Apartment in Kennewick. The residents grabbed an extinguisher to douse the flames and their sprinkler system did the rest to put it out. Fire crews say fires like that one can be avoided with a little proactivity.

"Just make sure that when you're cooking you're right there with it and monitoring it," said Kennewick Fire Department Battalion Chief Mikal Barnett Jr. "Also, for general safety with little kids in the house, make sure that your pans are turned inwards so that they can't reach them. Supervision is the key."

With grease fires, putting water on it will only fuel the fire unless it is pressurized like the sprinkler system. It is always a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen.
