Local Yakima Group Feeds Starving Abandoned Horses on Ahtanum Rd.

YAKIMA, WA. -- A group of abandoned horses in Yakima have been left to starve. The horses have survived the last few months on food donated by a local group but they need your help.

This is a story we first heard about on our facebook. People said they have seen dozens of starving horses on Ahtanum Road in Yakima. We took our cameras there today and found about 50 horses, some of which were skinny enough to see their rib cages. But the horses did have hay to eat.

NBC Right Now dug deeper and found out that a local group has delivered over 200 barrels of hay to these horses to keep them alive. The horses were in bad shape earlier this year after being abandoned here over the years. Normally they have enough to eat but fire damage and drought has taken away grazing areas. One volunteer says watching the horses struggle was too much to bear.

"We had to watch them die," Sherry Fryar said. "And that's hard. That's what really got me and God bless everybody that got committed to it. Committed to do something."

The Save the Ahtanum Horses group is now applying for 501C Non Profit status to help horses and other animals across the state.
