Madison receives third WAC honor

Posted: Updated:

DENVER – Idaho senior forward Stephen Madison collected his third Western Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week honor of the season on Monday after pouring in a career-high 35 points to go with 10 rebounds and two assists against Montana on Dec. 28.

Madison made 11-of-15 field goals including 1-of-2 3-pointers to shoot 73.3 percent from the field and also got to the free throw line 18 times, converting 12 to best his previous career high by six points. He scored 25 of his 35 points of 7-of-9 shooting in the second half, and also grabbed eight of his 10 boards after the break. It was the third double-double of the season for Madison.

"Stephen has really elevated his game," Idaho coach Don Verlin said. "He has done a great job of taking the right shots and it's all around, from scoring to rebounding and the thing I'm happy about is he is leading us in assists to which makes him hard to guard. I couldn't be happier for him. This is his fourth year in our program and he has improved every year and he's having a really nice senior year."

Madison leads Idaho with 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game and shoots a team-best 47.7 percent from the field. His scoring and rebounding averages each rank second in the WAC while his field goal percentage ranks 10th.

The honor is the fourth by an Idaho player this season, as junior Connor Hill earned it on Dec. 16 in addition to Madison's three.

The Vandals open up Western Athletic Conference play at home against Kansas City on Jan. 2 and will host Chicago State on Jan. 4. Both games begin at 7 p.m. in the Cowan Spectrum.
