KENNEWICK, WA - They will turn off the lights at Vista Field this week, and this time it's for good.

Vista Field is not FAA funded, which is one reason why the Port decided to close the airport. But administrators are still strictly following FAA guidelines.

On January 2nd a local group will pressure wash the runway markings away. Then five giant yellow "x's" will be painted. This will tell pilots flying into the area that the runway is no longer active.

It will cost the port about $15,000, paid to a local company called Stripe Rite from Kennewick.

"That's as per the FAA. We've been trying to follow their guidelines just so that everybody in the aviation community is aware we're taking all the right steps and going above and beyond. You don't close an airport every day or very often so we want to make sure that people are aware that it's closed," said Tana Bader Inglima, Port of Kennewick.

The Port will close for good on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The 100-plus acres will eventually be developed. Public hearings will be held in the near future to decide how the area will be designed.
