NBCRightNow.com - A federal tax credit that helps support wind energy developers while they establish themselves expires Tuesday.

The tax credit almost expired about a year ago, but Congress extended it as part of negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff.

A representative from the Northwest Power and Conservation Council said the credit will affect new developers in the future and that wind power companies right now are standing on pretty solid ground.

"So the expiration of the tax credit I don't think will have an affect on retailers in the Northwest but it will affect over time how many new wind power plants are built," said John Harrison, Media Representative, Northwest Power and Conservation Council.

NBC Right Now tried to reach out to Andrew O'Connell, who is developing a wind energy project in Eastern Oregon, but he did not respond to our emails yet.

However, some advocacy groups are lobbying to keep this kind of incentive because they said it promotes more growth in the wind power industry.

We'll keep following this story as we're able to make more contact with different groups.
