MORROW COUNTY, OR - The Morrow County Sheriff's Office is investigating why a Hermiston man lead officers on a high speed chase Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3PM on Tuesday, the Morrow County Sheriff's Office got a report of a light blue Ford utility type vehicle driving west on Interstate 84 near the Morrow/Umatilla County line swerving in and out of traffic, operating at high speeds with hazards flashers on.

MCSO deputies saw that suspect vehicle as it passed the 730 Junction at mile post 168, still heading west. The driver of the suspect vehicle was seen wearing a mask of some sort and a dark colored "hoody."

MCSO deputies and Boardman Police officers tried to stop the suspect vehicle as he was heading towards Boardman, but he did not stop. Instead, the driver was waving his hands in the air and honking his horn. The suspect vehicle was traveling between 50 and 70 mph.

Gilliam County Sheriff's Office was told about the suspect vehicle and waited for the vehicle at the Morrow/Gilliam County line. One MCSO deputy passed the suspect vehicle in a patrol vehicle, and assisted GCSO in setting up spike strips at mile post 141 west bound. The suspect vehicle drove over the spike strips and stopped with two front tires within a half mile.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, 32-year-old Adolfo Martin Mendez-Lopez of Hermiston, was arrested at the time.

Initially, Mendez-Lopez claimed there was a bomb inside the vehicle. Deputies looked in the car and didn't find a bomb, but they did find a loaded handgun on the passenger seat, a machete under the driver's seat and a large kitchen knife under the floor-mat.

Mendez-Lopez declines to tell deputies why he was operating the vehicle in the manner he was. He has been booked into the Umatilla County Jail for reckless driving and attempt to elude a police officer.

The investigation is ongoing.
