KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs rang in the new year in winning fashion as they defeated U.S. Division rivals Tri-City 4-2 at the Toyota Center on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early two-score lead on power play goals that came only 57 seconds apart by Mitch Holmberg and Riley Whittingham. The Americans drew within one with a little over a minute later when Lucas Nickles scored in short-handed fashion to make the score 2-1 Spokane going into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period Holmberg struck again 6:44 into the third on an assist from Adam Helewka to give the Chiefs the 3-1 lead. Holmberg is the Western Hockey Leagues scoring leader with 77 points (39 goals, 38 assists).

Brian Williams made it interesting later in the third frame when he brought Tri-City within a goal again with a little under six minutes left to play. The Ams failed to equalize before Spokane's Colton Bobyk scored on an empty net with only six seconds left in the game to round out the scoring.

The Chiefs will head home to the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena to host Victoria on Friday, Jan. 3, at 7:05 p.m. PST.

The Americans will stay in Kennewick to host the U.S. Division leading Portland on Jan. 3. The Winterhawks fell to B.C. Division leading Kelowna on Friday night.
