Pot Smokers Travel Miles For First Legal Sales In Colorado

Posted: Updated:
DENVER (AP) - One of the people who were waiting in line to buy legal marijuana today in Denver says he's going to frame his receipt.

Aaron Ramsey is a musician who served a brief jail sentence for pot possession less than a year ago. He drove from Missouri for the chance to buy it legally, as stores began selling recreational pot in Colorado this morning.

Another man drove from Ohio, and yet another came from Virginia, so they could be in Colorado for the start of the legal pot sales. Brandon Harris of Blanchester, Ohio, said, "We're making history here."

More than a dozen people were waiting in line outside one shop in Denver when it opened.

As the shops opened, the Denver police department tweeted, "Do you know the law?" It linked to city websites on state and local laws that include bans on public consumption, driving under the influence, taking marijuana out of state and giving pot to anyone under 21.

Washington state will start allowing pot sales later this year. The two states are being closely watched around the world because they are introducing the first regulated and taxed pot industries.

Skeptics worry that the drug will be more widely available to teens, even though legal sales are limited to adults over 21.
