RICHLAND, WA - It's a popular holiday tradition, meeting the first local babies born on New Year's Day.

The first one in the Tri-Cities came at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, just 15 minutes after the clock struck midnight.

Declan Day weighed 5 lbs. 8 oz., he's the third child for Shannen and Trevor Day.

The thrilled parents said, "Oh he's beautiful, we couldn't be any happier or any more excited, this is wonderful. We didn't check into the hospital until 9:30 so we didn't really think we'd be the first ones, not at all. We joked about him having a countdown to his birthday on tv."

The first baby born in the new year at Trios Health in Kennewick came at 5:32 am. It was a girl weighing 8 lbs. 1 oz.

Nurses say her parents wanted to remain anonymous, and didn't choose a name right away.
