PENDLETON, OR - Northeastern Oregon's drone testing range will encompass the city of Pendleton and several hundred square miles of rugged, remote land to the southeast.

The range is one of at least a dozen in Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska where the University of Alaska will coordinate drone testing. The university was approved Monday by the Federal Aviation Administration as one of six testing entities for commercial unmanned aerial vehicles.

The vast majority of Pendleton's range, which encompasses parts of the Elkhorn and Blue mountains, has little population or air traffic.

The Federal Aviation Administration does not allow drones' commercial use. Congress has directed the agency to grant drones access to U.S. skies by 2015, but the agency said the process would take longer than Congress expected.
