Instead of hiring a new police chief, Sunnyside's city manager has decided to take a new approach.
SUNNYSIDE, WA - Instead of hiring a new police chief, Sunnyside's city manager has decided to take a new approach.
City Manager Don Day has been interviewing three candidates for the position of police chief but said he was dissatisfied with the process.
He said after talking to other officers and the community, the city manager learned people think the police department is lacking in certain areas. That's why Day is bringing in retired Lacey Police Chief, Larry Dickerson, to fill in as Interim Sunnyside Chief.
The city manager said Dickerson has a lot of experience and will look at the department with a new fresh pair of eyes.
"He's going to be able to come in here and say these are the things you're doing right, these are the things that you're doing wrong," said Day. "You need to own these, you need to fix these, and anybody who becomes the chief has got to be able to address these issues."
Day said the city council will be asked to approve Dickerson's contract next week.
The city manager said once the interim police chief completes his assessment and the city makes needed changes, whoever becomes permanent police chief will be set up for success and not failure.
