PASCO, WA - New numbers released Tuesday show the Washington Health Benefit Exchange is one of the most successful nationwide, but officials say they need more young adults to signup to support the system.

The Washington Healthplanfinder's new numbers show that more than 270,000 people signed up for healthcare since October. But, they are looking for more young adults to enroll for coverage.

The young adults demographic ages 18 to 34 made up only 21% of enrollment so far. Healthcare experts say enrolling a larger group of young people will better balance the system and help pay for the insurance.

Younger, healthier people help support the financing needed to cover insurance for the older people.

"They will use services but in part they are a major portion of the financing piece for everybody else. So it's important to get young, healthy people into the system to make sure the system works and to make sure that it's funded adequately," said Wesley Luckey, Community Action Connections.

Luckey says he expects more young adults to sign up closer to the final enrollment deadline on March 31st. He tells NBC Right Now many young adults are concerned about costs but realize the importance of healthcare coverage.

Healthcare sign up experts continue to reach out to young people and encourage them to sign up soon.
