BURNS, OR - A coyote killing contest is scheduled this weekend in Eastern Oregon.

The event near Burns is called the JMK Coyote Hunt. This is its 8th year. Organizers say last year, 20 teams of hunters killed nearly 150 coyotes.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says it hadn't been aware of the hunt, and points out that a commercial event like this one would need a permit to be on federal land.

However, organizer Duane Freilino says the contest will begin and end on private property, but where hunters go to kill coyotes is up to them.

The state of Oregon doesn't regulate coyote hunting. Sponsors say contests help control coyote numbers.

An environmental group called Predator Defense argues that killing off the top males and females just causes coyote packs to produce more pups.
