FIRST ON KHQ: Officers Shoot Man With Knife In East Spokane

Spokane Police shot a man Thursday night after they say he refused multiple commands to drop a knife.  

Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub told KHQ Reporter Patrick Erickson that just before 9:00pm, officers responded to a 911 call near the area of Sprague and Magnolia. Callers said a man was inside Truth Ministries threatening people with a knife. Police say the man was kicked out of Truth Ministires earlier in the night for threatening people with a piece of lumber. The man also told other people staying at the shelter that he was a former soldier suffering from PTSD.

When officers arrived they found that armed man in an alleyway just behind the Truth Ministries building. 

Straub says officers gave multiple commands to put the weapon down, and they also used a taser, which did not work and the man continued to move toward them. Straub says officers gave even more commands to drop the weapon. The man continued to move toward officers and they were forced to open fire. Immediately officers and firefighters from a nearby fire station began performing CPR. 

That man was taken to the hospital and a press release sent out early Friday morning indicates that he is expected to survive. His name has not been released.

The Chief also said that this is an unfortunate incident and his officers were doing what they were trained to do when their lives and lives of the public are put in danger. 

The Washington State Patrol will be handling the investigation.

Press Release Issued Early Friday Morning From The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR)

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR Team) is investigating a shooting involving the Spokane Police Department, which occurred this evening at around 9:00 pm.

At approximately 9:00 pm, Spokane Police officers received a 911 call indicating a male was at Truth Ministries in the 1900 block of E. Sprague threatening individuals with a knife.  Officers responded within minutes and located the male in the alley behind Truth Ministries.
Officers contacted the individual and gave verbal commands for the male to drop the knife he was holding.  The individual refused to comply with officer commands.  Officers deployed a Taser.   The individual did not drop the weapon and moved towards one of the officers.
Officers fired shots.  Life-saving measures were immediately taken and the individual was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Washington State Patrol is the managing agency in this incident.  Future communications regarding this incident will be sent out via the SIRR Team.


The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the officers involved in this incident.


Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
