SPOKANE, Wash. -

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team continues to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred Thursday night. Washington State Patrol has identified the man involved as 29-year-old Aaron Johnson.

Volunteers at Truth Ministries said Friday that the man seemed paranoid and anxious before the incident. Thursday night was Johnson's third day staying at the shelter and each night he seemed to get more agitated.

At Truth Ministries, it is policy for the men who stay there to have their bags put into a locked area overnight. However, when volunteers told Johnson that he couldn't keep his bag with him he lost it.

"That is when he really got angry and started saying some vulgar and threatening things," said Marty McKinney the owner of Truth Ministries. "Volunteers told him he needed to leave, and that's when he really escalated."

After checking Johnson's criminal history, KHQ found that he has multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including riot with a deadly weapon, residential burglary, theft, and assault.

Friday night, Volunteers say Johnson started threatening them while waving a four by four above his head. That is when he was asked to leave and was escorted outside. By the time officers responded, Johnson was armed with a knife. The officers tazed him, but that still did not stop him from charging at them. That is when two Spokane Police Officers fired their weapons, hitting Johnson. Right now Johnson is at Sacred Heart and is expected to survive.

The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team is still interviewing witnesses and the officers involved, so the investigation is ongoing. However, if you ask volunteers at Truth Ministries, they say officers did exactly what they needed to do to protect themselves and others in the situation.

"I believe they did a very professional job and I feel bad for those police officers feeling like they needed to do it, but if you had seen the video and how he was acting and what he said, I know that the community and everybody would understand something major happened out there," Mckinney said.

Johnson is charged with second-degree assault and will be booked into the Spokane County Jail when he is released from the hospital.

As for Truth Ministries, they have cameras inside and outside, but only the ones inside record. Friday, they went and bought more security cameras to put outside in case anything like this ever happens again.
