Despite Garret Hughson's 35 saves in net, the Spokane Chiefs were shutout for just the second time this season as the Portland Winterhawks blanked Spokane 5-0 Sunday in Portland, OR. Spokane has dropped 6 straight against the Winterhawks and are now 7 points back of Portland for first place in the U.S. Division.

Hughson turned aside 17 of 18 Portland shots in the first period as he kept Spokane in the game. Portland broke through in the final minute of the period at 19:19 when Brendan Leipsic scored on a rebound to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after one. In the second, Portland would score 3 times to take a 4-0 lead after two. Chase DeLeo at 7:16 made it 2-0. Keegan Iverson scored on an odd man rush at 10:49 to extend the lead to 3-0, and Leipsic scored his second of the game on a 4 on 4 at 15:32 to cap the three goal second period.

Portland would cap the scoring on an Oliver Bjorkstrand power play goal at 4:24 of the third period, as the Winterhawks outshot the Chiefs 40-25 in the contest. Spokane was 0-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill. Spokane will return home to the Spokane Arena to host the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday night at 7:05pm. Mike Boyle will have the call on 1510 KGA starting with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.
