RICHLAND, WA - A newspaper carrier helped Richland Police nab two men in a burglary early Monday morning.
Around 4:15AM, the newspaper carrier was in the area of the 700 block of Strange Drive and saw a Dodge Caravan parked at a home the carrier knew was vacant. The lights of the van were on and the van's door were open.
The news carrier then watched two men leave the empty house, get in their van and leave. The news carrier called 911, and followed the van at a safe distance. Eventually Richland Police were able to catch up to the news carrier and the suspicious van near the area of Steptoe and Columbia Park. Officers stopped the van, and arrested the two men inside.
A number of objects that were in plain sight in the van looked like they had been taken from a house under construction. The van was impounded so that a search warrant could be applied at a later time.
Both men that were arrested denied being involved in the construction trades and had no explanation for items found inside the van.
Officers went to the home on Strange Drive later and found evidence that a burglary had happened there. Officers also checked out a home on the 200 block of Tiger Lane where it appeared some of the items were stolen from.
The two men are in the Benton County Jail on a 72 hour hold.
