Hermiston Annexes Oregon State University Extension Center

HERMISTON, OR – Oregon State University's Hermiston Agricultural Research & Extension Center (HAREC) will soon be able to conduct more research on local crops thanks to an annexation approved by the Hermiston City Council on Monday.

The annexation of 168 acres into the city limits will allow HAREC to purchase water from the City of Hermiston/Port of Umatilla Regional Water System to irrigate additional land for research.  The water will be applied to land which isn't currently being farmed.

"The value that OSU Extension brings to the area can't be measured by the $2 million budget it has," said Mayor Dave Drotzmann.  "We're an agricultural community, and we need to do everything we can to support it."

HAREC serves nearly 500,000 acres of irrigated agriculture in Oregon and Washington's Columbia Basin.  The center concentrates on discovery and implementation of agricultural and horticultural opportunities and provides solutions to production restraints.  OSU has operated an Extension Center in the Hermiston area since 1909.
