KENNEWICK, WA – Imagine you just found out your grandkid is in jail and needs your help, but the person feeding you this information is just trying to get into your wallet. That happened to one local family that almost fell victim to a scam hitting our area.

Scammers were out for some supposed bail money. On the phone he made it sound like he was a lawyer and even knew all the right things to say, but the Odland family did not give him a penny. Paul Odland's son goes to school out of state.

The scammer first called Paul's parents saying he was their grandson in jail after getting a DUI. Paul called the apparent number for a lawyer who sounded knowledgeable but was really using the family's panic as a tactic to steal from them. When the scammer asked Paul for the bail money to be sent to New Jersey in cash, he did some research online.

"The only place they screwed up was in the transfer of money. If they had a simpler or more logical way of doing it they probably wouldn't necessarily have tripped up. We could have got caught, we were close," said Odland.

Paul says calling his son did not seem important because he was convinced he was in jail without a phone. When they caught on to the scam and finally called their son's cell he was not in jail and had no idea what they were talking about. The family says they want to share their close encounter with the scammer so that other's wont fall for the same scheme in the future.
