The Central Washington State Fair in Yakima could soon be named the official fair of Washington.
YAKIMA, WA - The Central Washington State Fair in Yakima could soon be named the official fair of Washington.
Fair officials are excited to be potentially named the official fair of Washington once again but there is some controversy in the decision. The Central Washington Fair previously held the title until 1936, the last year the state recognized an official fair.
Now, lawmakers have proposed a bill that would return the title to the fair held in Yakima each year.
"It's a formality. We're it," Greg Stewart said. "We probably have one of the best displays of agriculture and we do a lot of state wide and national competitions here. We have all the ingredients of a state fair."
But recently, the Puyallup Fair, which is the considered the largest in the state, rebranded itself as the "Washington State Fair." That name, mind you, was not officially given by the state legislature.
The bill to name the fair in Yakima the official state fair received an endorsement from the Yakima City Council last week. Now we'll have to wait to see if the bill passes through the state legislature.
