RICHLAND, WA - Richland police are looking for a man after chasing him in a stolen truck with a stolen trailer behind it.
A little after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday police got reports of a man breaking into cars at the Fred Meyer parking lot in Richland. As officers arrived, the man drove away in a pickup truck.
Officers drove after him until they hit the dead end along Carrier Road, in the area of the train bridge along Highway 240. The suspect then got out of the truck and ran off into the Yakima River Delta. Investigators and K-9 units went after him but weren't able to catch him.
"One of the other complicating factors is there was a train coming along the tracks, he scooted in front of the train, the officers paused for safety, trying to make sure the train got by and didn't hit any of them or the suspect," said Captain Mike Cobb, Richland Police Department.
Police say they have identified the suspect as Anthony Roberts, a man in his upper 30's. They say he was driving a stolen gray 2011 Chevy pickup truck with a stolen white trailer attached to the back. The pickup truck was taken from a Toyota lot Tuesday morning and the trailer was stolen several months ago from a construction site in Kennewick.
Officers also say when Roberts drove off from Fred Meyer, he left his wife at the store. Police do not yet know if she was involved with any of the crimes.
Police say they know who Roberts is and he has been involved in prior crimes.
